When coconut fibres are extracted from coconut husks we get the by-product cocopeat. Cocopeat is used for plants as it helps in water retention, improves aeration and assists in better nutrient uptake. Also, cocopeat has a neutral soil pH and provides resistance against root disease. Cocopeat contains certain levels of nutrients but not enough to support plant growth entirely. To use cocopeat in the garden it has to be mixed with compost.
How to use cocopeat bricks in your garden
One of the processed products of cocopeat is cocopeat bricks. Cocopeat bricks come in compressed form and they can expand 4 to 5 times their volume when they are soaked in water. So just break off the amount of cocopeat you want to use for your garden.
After taking a piece of cocopeat, soak it in water for 15 to 20 minutes. Then use a garden trowel to stir the cocopeat till it becomes loose. If it remains dry, then add some more water and stir it until it becomes loose. After the cocopeat becomes loose you can use it in your garden.
In gardens, you can mix cocopeat with garden soil in a ratio of 30:70.
Plants grown in containers or pots dry out fast. If you want to use cocopeat in pots then mix 30 % cocopeat with 40% compost and 30% garden soil.
You can also use cocopeat to mulch your soil. The best time to mulch the soil with cocopeat is during the summer season.
If you want to use cocopeat in the seed starting mix. Then mix one-third of cocopeat with one-third of compost and one-third of sandy soil.
